Where should i stay in boston for our anniversary? (28 year olds)?

We have been to Boston before and loved the public botanical gardens and Newbury street and may go there again but I would like some fresh places to go. Maybe some good shows like we have back home in NY (Broadway shows) that are cheap. My husband is laid off right now so we can not spend much. Just the hotels alone are $130+! Please give us any suggestions you can about areas to stay in and things to do there. Thank you sooo much!!!
