Is it worth trying to buy an abandoned house?

I just moved to Buffalo, NY from the Bronx, NY. I have seen MORE ABANDONED house here in Buffalo then Manhattan and Bronx put together. I am married. I have a seven year old daughter. I am researching information about abandoned houses. I would like (in my goa)l to obtain a three family home so I can rent out 2 floors to section 8 to make my money back. I would live on the bottom floor with my family. Any info can help me. Please if my spelling is not good keep it to yourself.
