How to have the best time in NY?

I'm guessing you mean tips in the city. I suggest that you don't leave the city only because there so much to see there. What most tourist make the mistake of doing is staying in Manhattan during their whole visit, but NYC has so much more to offer. You definitely have to visit all of the typical tourist sites (Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Central Park, Times Square, Grand Central, a museum or two, etc.) I suggest visiting the five boroughs Mon-Fri (each day you go to a new borough). If you have a friend who lives in NYC, that's even better! (they could really help you get around without getting lost!) The best place to see the Macy's fireworks display is anywhere with a good view of the sky near the Huston (normally Manhattan's West Side below 59th Street or Jersey waterfronts) Just keep in mind to look for things when planning your trip, like celebrations/parades/festivals, NYC.gov has some good lists.
